  • PARIS, FRANCE-- Youth activists at the Climate Generation Space protested the COP21 corporate sponsor Engie, the energy company in France, which profits from the coal and fracking industry. Activists held up signs that read "Engie, we see through your greenwashing" and "Kick big polluters out."<br />
<br />
Next door to the COP21 is the Climate Generation Space (Les espaces Générations Climat), which is a space that is open to the public as well as those attending COP21. Les espaces Générations Climat is where many NGO organizations are holding panel discussions and debates on solutions to climate change. <br />

The award is presented with dishonor to the country that is responsible for wrecking the climate or getting in the way of the climate negotiations. It was announced that Denmark won the award today because they are "aiming to cut climate targets and shrink climate finance contributions."<br />

The action today took place just before an announcement by 350.org on the divestment campaign, which stated that "more than 500 institutions representing over $3.4 trillion in assets have made some form of divestment commitment."<br />

  • PARIS, FRANCE-- On the seventh day of negotiations at COP21, the Fossil of the Day Award was presented to Saudi Arabia and the United States. <br />
<br />
The award is presented with dishonor to the country that is responsible for wrecking the climate or getting in the way of the climate negotiations. It was announced that Saudi Arabia won the first place award because the Saudi delegation says that "we cannot discriminate between clean and dirty fuels." The United States came in second place because they are now insisting that "vulnerable countries take compensation off the table for all time and never bring it up again."<br />
<br />
A "Ray of the Day" was also awarded today to a country that is helping to make progress in the climate talks. The Philippines was awarded today's "Ray of the Day." <br />

The activists were holding a rope representing the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit of global temperature rise that is necessary to stay below to prevent climate change disasters. The youth activists along with Chief Bill Erasmus were asking delegates to commit to staying below 1.5 degrees in the climate negotiations and invited them to show their commitment by doing the limbo underneath the rope at the action. <br />

In the streets surrounding the venues for the Climat Forum, a "Global Village of Alternatives” was attended by hundreds of people. The organizers of the Climat Forum explained that the Global Village of Alternatives will "introduce participants to concrete alternative solutions, both local and international, for climate and social justice. Available spaces will be divided along different overall themes (environment-friendly housing, energy, food and agriculture, transportation, finance etc.) and will be filled with hundreds of stands hosted by people who have concretly implemented these alternatives. This Village also intends to be a friendly, participative and lively space thanks to performances, concerts, shared meals etc."<br />

Their action addressed the issue of palm oil production and its impact on the climate. Gabrielle Fay, an activist with Green Generation, spoke at the action about seeing first hand the illegal slash and burn of forests in Borneo because of palm oil production. <br />

Next door to the COP21 is the Les espaces Générations Climat, which is a space that is open to the public as well as those attending COP21. Les espaces Générations Climat is where many NGO organizations are holding panel discussions and debates on solutions to climate change. <br />

  • PARIS, FRANCE-- A coalition of impacted communities gathered today at the Peace Wall in Paris, France, on Human Rights Day. Representatives from Indigenous, Black, Latino, Asian and Pacific Islander organizations attended the event and untied behind the message "It takes roots to weather the storm." The organizations represented communities impacted by environmental issues, such as fracking, mining, and oil extraction. The 'It Takes Roots' event took place during COP21 in Paris. <br />

  • PARIS, FRANCE-- At at protest performance at the Louvre Museum today, activists and artists held up umbrella's with the message "Fossil Free Culture" painted on them. The activists are calling on the museum to drop fossil fuel sponsors Total and Eni, two of the six major oil companies in the world. The protest at the Louvre in Paris occurred during week two of the COP21 climate negotiations. <br />

  • PARIS, FRANCE-- As the COP21 entered it's sixth day of climate negotiations, the Climat Forum began a weekend of activities in the neighborhood of Montreuil in Paris. In the streets surrounding the venues for the Climat Forum, a "Global Village of Alternatives” was attended by hundreds of people. The organizers of the Climat Forum explained that the Global Village of Alternatives will "introduce participants to concrete alternative solutions, both local and international, for climate and social justice. Available spaces will be divided along different overall themes (environment-friendly housing, energy, food and agriculture, transportation, finance etc.) and will be filled with hundreds of stands hosted by people who have concretly implemented these alternatives. This Village also intends to be a friendly, participative and lively space thanks to performances, concerts, shared meals etc."<br />
